Letters From You.

John Coleman

Mama catching a treat

My folks have been feeding "Mama" every night for the past several
years. She comes to their back door every night just after dusk and
has brought several of her litters as well over this time. Of
course other coons come too, but Mama seems to be the friendliest
and has more personality. She prefers peanut butter sandwiches in
addition to the cat food. My folks live in a retirement village in
Atlantic Beach, FL and look forward to the evening feedings.
Nice coon site

They would enjoy hearing from you! Mom's name is 'Pat'.

Linda
Thank you for the lovely visit with the coons.
I enjoyed the admiration and respect you give
these wonderful creatures.

I am a wildlife rehabilator in the state of Wisconsin. I
work exclusivly with raccoons. I of course have lots of
raccoon friends who are returned to the wild after being
with me and regaining their health and strength or in
the case of babies - learning to live in the wild. I
would very much like to help with questions. Or
perhaps I could help people understand that raccoons are
really friendly when young(in bumper car stage as my
husband says) but when they are grown they are still
wild animals and should be in the wild. You should
understand that if you keep a raccoon as a pet you are
almost assurdely signing its death warrant.

Eric Chapman
We are rehabbers from the Upper Penninsula of Michigan - So far, our
raccoon friends, since 1993, have been Joon, The Bandit, Rocky, Nikko,
Kato, Ahyung Chi ("Courage" in Mandarin Chinese) and, this year, we have
just been honored with the wonderful presence of Bushiko ("Child of the
Warrior's Code" - Japanese) He was found alongside the body of his dead
mom (hit by a car) and nursed back to health by our family vet - also a
rehabber. I'm enclosing a digital snapshot of him.
So good to see others that appreciate the wonders of such an intelligent
and wonderful (and most loving) 'lil critter!

Thought we'd update you on the Chapman '97 raccoon rehabilatation. In
addition to Bushiko, we now have Choto "Very Tiny" (brought to us on
July 1) and Dorran (brought to us on July 4 and named after the neat
couple, Doreen and Randy, who rescued him - his mom had been hit by a
car.) Choto is still a "bottle baby" but Bushiko and Dorran have been
discovering the wonders of the brushpiles in the back woods and the joys
of tree climbing! Bushiko also has discovered the wonders of our dog
Jake's tail!

This will probably be the final update in the Chapman Raccoon Saga for
1997. We received one more baby, "Spike" mid July. Folks had found him
living in an overturned garbage can, kept an eye on him for almost 2
weeks, making sure he really was an orphan, and made sure he had enough
to eat. They decided that he would need more help than they could give
him and brought him to us. All of the "kids" now are living in a
wonderful brushpile at the back of our yard which borders a dense
woods. (With no raccoon preditors!) We keep puppy and kitten dried
food out (as well as grapes and bananas!) and have a kids' wading pool
set up for them. This natural living is experimental this year because
3 of the 4 coons were already used to being on their own. They
absolutely hated the idea of having to live in any kind of pen or
enclosure. It is working great...they are learning the woods, which
they must do, while in a safe area where they are still much loved and
fed. They don't wander too far, but are free...and that's what counts!
And we will make sure they will have all they need this winter.
